Therapeutic area

Refractory ascites

Ascites is fluid accumulation in the abdomen and a common complication of advanced, decompensated liver cirrhosis.

Patient burden

Refractory ascites does not respond adequately to standard diuretic treatment or returns quickly. It may require repeated large-volume paracentesis and is associated with pain, limited mobility, breathing difficulty, infection risk and poor prognosis.

BioVie’s approach

BioVie is investigating BIV201, a continuous-infusion formulation of terlipressin. The goal is to learn whether the treatment can slow ascites accumulation, reduce procedure frequency and allow more time outside the hospital.

Important context

BIV201 is investigational. It is not approved for refractory ascites, and its safety and efficacy have not been established.

Evidence and compliance note

Development-stage information can change. Investigational candidates are not approved, and safety and efficacy have not been established. Review source documents and current regulatory disclosures.
